Come and spend the day creating your own piece of felt at Narberth Museum. This is a beautiful venue with a spacious art studio and within easy walking distance of Narberth town centre, with its creative shops and cafes.
You will learn or refresh on the basics of Feltmaking and how to turn your creation into a wall hanging on a piece of driftwood. There will be plenty of coloured wool tops for you to choose from to make your felt piece and additional texture can be added too, such as yarns, open weave fabric and curly wool locks. Having a day for this process will enable time for extra creativity before the alchemy of fusing the wool tops to make felted fabric takes place.
Materials and most equipment, as well as hanging thread and driftwood will be provided, although you may like to bring your own. Many people use their hands only for felting, however there will be one wooden hand palm sander for you to take it in turns to try out. If you have your own, you may prefer to bring that. Please bring a rolling pin or a piece of thick wooden dowling to help with the felting process. Also, you will need to bring an old towel and a bag to transport your felt piece home in, before drying it. You'll then be able to transform it into a wall hanging, if you wish. Although coloured and varied textured wool tops will be provided, you may like to bring some of your own favourite felting wool, if you have some. All materials are as ethically sourced as possible, with some of the wool tops being from local West Wales sheep.
There will be plenty of visual resources to help inspire you, including images by other Feltmakers. You will be given an information sheet with some historical context, as well as links to Feltmaking resources.
There is a cafe in the museum where you can buy refreshments and there are cafes nearby in the town where you can buy lunch. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch, if you prefer.
The images above are of sections of my own felt pieces. You can see images from other workshops on the Gallery page.
